In the present day of high literate environment it’s important we start developing the skills of reading in our children from their early age.
Remember a person who doesn’t have a habit of reading will not have any advantage over one who cannot read.
Learning to read is a long process and we parents play an important role in teaching, engaging and creating interest in children.
Reading eventually should become a process that a child loves to do and enjoy thus improving knowledge.
The best way to start is by showing them story books that contain pictures. They make them excited and we can slowly start reading to them.
Children usually show interest looking at colorful pictures.Slowly they will develop interest in reading them self.
Here are a few Amazing Tips to Cultivate The Reading Habit In Children
Start with basic pre-reading skills:
As said earlier the best way to start the basic pre-reading skills is by developing interest in pictures and text.
Slowly they will start recognizing the book by seeing the pictures and the text. The next step we take is by reading for them so that they develop good listening skills.
I personally feel good listening skills is a prerequisite for a child to become a good reader.
It’s important we create a pleasant environment that helps the child to start listening and reading.
This becomes the foundation for them to practice the habit of reading.
The environment we create should be in such a way that it encourages them to read.
We can start with reading a story book, make this a practice every day and slowly make them read self.
Introduce them to the books based on their interest:
Once they start showing interest in reading, getting them the books that match their interests and hobbies is an ideal way to make it a habit.
Raise some interesting questions which should make them find answers.
Encourage them to find the books by self:
Once we understand their interests and hobbies, probably the first book can be a gift from us.
If we notice that they are loving the book, the next best thing we can do is take them to a library or a book store where they can pick up their next book by themselves.
This will automatically create interest in them to read the book and can help taking their interest and passion for reading to the next level.
Reward them on their milestones.
It would be a good practice if we start rewarding them on their successful completion of a milestone.
It can be reading an hour daily, or completing an article or a lesson.
Set the milestone accordingly. Reward them with what they like. This can boost their interest in reading.
